What Is Woodworm?

Woodworm is a general term used to describe a wide range of wood boring pests. The most common woodworm beetle in the UK, is the furniture beetle, which is a small brown flying insect.

Other wood boring insects include:

  • Deathwatch Beetle
  • House Longhorn
  • Powder Post Beetle
  • Wood Boring Weevils
  • Ambrosia Beetle
  • Fan Bearing Wood Borer
  • Wood Borer and Wharf Borer
What Causes Woodworm & How Does Woodworm Spread?

There are a number ways in which woodworm infestations usually occur. The pests can make their way into a building in firewood, second-hand furniture or simply by flying in through a window, which is in close proximity to a tree.

Once inside the building, the female beetles lay their eggs on rough unpolished wooden surfaces such as floorboards, window sills, joinery and most seriously, structural timbers such as roof timbers, rafters and joists. The grubs then bore straight into the wood leaving no trace for another 3 years or more, when they will finally emerge, causing lots of small round holes in the timber. With the cycle then starting again, with the new batch of females, laying more eggs.

Woodworm can cause significant damage to both residential and commercial properties if an infestation is not identified and dealt with swiftly. So, it is important to get specialist help, as soon as you see any signs of a potential infestation.

HOW CAN MONITOR HELP?

A woodworm specialist can identify the presence of any wood-boring insects, by carrying out a building survey. So, we would always recommend a thorough site survey, completed by one of our expert woodworm technicians, to establish which wood-boring insects are present and the extent of any infestation.

The findings of the survey will then allow us to recommend the most effective treatment and course of action and we provide you with a quote for the associated costs.

Please note that while we will treat your property (floorboards, timbers etc), we do not treat furniture.

We can offer 10, 12 & 20 year FCA backed guarantees on our work

WOODWORM FAQS
How do you treat woodworm?

Woodworm should be treated by a professional service, such as Monitor, in order to ensure that the work is carried out adequately, to prevent further infestations. After the building is thoroughly surveyed, an experienced technician will administer the best woodworm treatment for the job.

How much does woodworm treatment cost?

Costs depend on a number of factors, such as where the problem is and the extent of the infestation. For example, if the infestation is in structural joists, that may require more work, than if the woodworm is in floorboards. However, you can rest assured, that our prices are very competitive, and we will never try and sell you things that you don't need.

How to get rid of woodworm in the UK?

If you are searching for how to kill woodworm, the best course of action, is always to call in a professional woodworm service, who can administer the most appropriate type of woodworm killer to address the infestation.

What do woodworm look like?

People ask what woodworm beetles look like, however woodworm larvae and adult beetles are rarely seen as they are so tiny. this means that you are usually more likely to spot the exit holes that they make. rather than spotting the tiny brown beetles themselves.

How to tell if woodworm is active?

An active woodworm infestation is usually identified by the following signs:

  • Small holes in timber, with fresh dust next to or under the holes
  • The holes will have sharp edges and the wood inside of the holes will be a lighter colour
  • Wooden joists and beams may start showing signs of edges breaking away to reveal fresh, light coloured wood underneath
  • Tiny beetles near or on the affected timber
